Letters, medical care materials, life insurance policy information, and a reminiscence written by George White, a Burlington (Iowa) native who served in World War II with Company M, 222nd Infantry Regiment, 42nd Division. The core of this collection is letters which White wrote to his parents (Wilfred and Luretta), his grandmother, and his sister (Marion White Chatman). The correspondence, which is also transcribed, provides excellent detail into the life of a soldier. He details guard duty, recreational activities, training, expectations as combat nears, and the sights in France. Injured while in France, he writes about hospitalization, activities while in the hospital, medical care, and his healing progress. The collection also includes a "visitor's log" of people who visited White in the hospital, a history of Company M of the 222nd Regiment, and a reminiscence of the war written in 1946. Also found are medical records for post-discharge stateside care, disability pension information, and vocational rehabilitation materials. George died in 1948 from cancer. The collection includes information about his death, life insurance claim, and benefits. A reminiscence by Marion White Chatman provides background about her brother's life prior to military service. A portrait shows George White in uniform.
